About Best Overall Apps
Best Overall Apps is a small editorial team that picks the one app most people should use in each category — with honest alternatives for everyone else.
We started in 2026 because most “best of” lists rank ten apps without telling you which one to actually pick. That’s not helpful when you’re standing in the App Store at 9pm wondering what to install. Our format flips the script:
- One winner — chosen for the typical user, not the power user.
- 4–6 alternatives — if your needs are specific (privacy, niche use case, deep platform fit).
- Methodology in the open — see exactly how we score. Read our methodology →

Leah is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with a PhD in Nutrition Sciences and twelve years of clinical and academic practice. At Best Overall Apps she oversees every nutrition, sleep, mental-wellness, and health pick — including the rubric design and the database / accuracy verification protocol used to score nutrition apps. She is the reviewer of record for any pick that touches clinical or dietary claims.
Morgan has spent twelve years writing about the apps people actually use, with bylines across consumer-tech publications. They built Best Overall Apps because they were tired of "best of ten" listicles that never tell you which one to download. Morgan tests every flagship app personally and writes the plain-English voice that runs through the site.
Sam spent seven years as a product manager at Google before moving into independent reviewing. They lead our productivity, AI tools, privacy, finance, and smart-home coverage and built the weighted-rubric scoring system used across the site. Sam's reviews are quietly opinionated — if a category has no clear winner for most people, Sam is the editor who will say so out loud.
Funding & independence
Best Overall Apps is independently funded. We do not accept paid placements, sponsored picks, or vendor-supplied review units that come with conditions. Where useful, we may use referral links to App Store / Play Store listings; this never influences the winner.
